Gas-Guzzling Pentagon Going Green

Content Keyword RSS | March 29, 2009

The Pentagon may seem an unlikely promoter of alternative energy, but the biggest consumer of oil in the United States is looking at ways to become just that by partnering with private firms. When you don’t use as much fuel, not only does it not cos …

New World Record: Wind-Powered Car Hits 126 Mph

Content Keyword RSS | March 29, 2009

This might not be the prettiest car you’ve seen lately but it’s certainly the fastest. Sure there are plenty of cars that can go faster than 126 mph but this one is the only wind-power vehicle capable to do that. Sir Richard Jenkings drove the car in Ivanpah Lake in Nevada. With winds of only 30 mph he managed to achieve an outstanding speed of 126.1 mph. I’m sure that in a few years, or even sooner, a new manufacturer will be able to beat this record . Ecotricity is the record holder f

Centuries Long War Against Trees in Texas Appears to be Failing

Content Keyword RSS | March 29, 2009

The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) initial report shows Texas has 60 million acres of forestland - more than any other state in the continental United States. Of that, 12 million is located in the Piney Woods of East Texas with the remaining acreage spread across the state. The inventory helps identify brushlands and encroaching woody vegetation such as mesquite and juniper. The invasive woody vegetation can soak up water and shade out the sun that rangeland grass needs to grow, which creat

Golden Nanocups Could Improve Solar Cell Efficiency

Content Keyword RSS | March 23, 2009

Now scientists are working on metallic nanoparticles to manipulate light in more effective ways than conventional optical materials to tap extra energy from the sunlight. Rice University researchers are paying attention to cup-shaped gold nanostructures that can bend light in a more manipulative manner. Here the cup behaves like three-dimensional nano-antennas. The gold nanocups interrelate with light in two major ways: axially, the up-down direction, or transverse, the left-right track. The t

Biomass as an Alternative Fuel: Are You Prepared?

Content Keyword RSS | March 23, 2009

The oil crisis and world overdependence on fossil fuels have paved the way for new developments in alternative energy sources. One of these alternative sources is biomass, which certainly has the potential of being considered a good substitute for fossil fuel. Seeds of fortune are often planted in the throes of a crisis. Biomass may [...]
